NetBSD 7.99.1 NetBSD 7.99.1 (GENERIC) #9: Tue Nov 4 21:16:35 PST 2014 xxxxxx@:/usr/obj/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC amd64
>Description:
For a Shuttle SG45H7 small form factor system with Intel G45 (Eaglelake) graphics, X11_TYPE=native, trying to start xfce4 with startx merely results in a blank screen. The tail end of /var/log/messages reads:

Nov 4 22:34:27 /netbsd: drm: GMBUS [i915 gmbus vga] timed out, falling back to bit banging on pin 2
Nov 4 22:34:27 /netbsd: drm: GMBUS [i915 gmbus dpb] timed out, falling back to bit banging on pin 5

The machine is connected using a HDMI to DVI connector to a Samsung Syncmaster P2370HD monitor. X.org in other BSDs such as FreeBSD 10.x and DragonFly have not had a problem with this setup, also, this setup worked fine with NetBSD current prior to the implementation of drm2.

No /etc/X11/xorg.conf is being used.

I experienced this same type of failure here with Intel HD 4600
graphics. A newer (2.99.916) version of xf86-video-intel took care of
 the issue for me.

Can you drop the following file into /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers and
see if it makes things any better?

For the case of the Shuttle SG45H7 small form factor machine with
Intel Core 2 quad Q9400 CPU and G45 Eaglelake Intel integrated
graphics, the suggestion of Soren Jacobsen:

did result in being able to use startx to start fluxbox and run an
xterm. However similar to behavior observed for this machine in
earlier iterations of drm2, any gtk (or glib2?) application such as
gvim or Xfce4's Terminal has unreadable text / corrupted fonts.

 Try turning off Acceleration...

     Option "NoAccel" "True"

Yes, this is not a fix but...

Combining the following two suggestions results in working but
nonaccelerated Xfce4 on the Shuttle SG45H7 system with Intel G45
Eaglelake graphics. I am just relieved to be able to use a current
kernel instead of an older one in any sort of working X.org Xfce4
 system.

The complete procedure for me, after mv-ing the original intel_drv.so
to save it and dropping the alternative intel_drv.so into
 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers, was to run
 # Xorg -configure
which complained that no screens could be found but at least generated
 a xorg.conf.new, to edit xorg.conf.new to uncomment

 Option "NoAccel" "True"

and finally to copy xorg.org.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I notice /var/log/Xorg.0.log now shows repeated calls to try and open
the drm minor device. Are the plans to have NetBSD implement this drm
minor functionality or to just have one device at presumably
 /dev/dri/card0?

The machine with integrated Intel G45 graphics X11_TYPE=native with
 NetBSD 7.99.6 GENERIC amd64 updated through March 9, 2015, 08:31 PST
 now properly loads and initializes
 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/dri/i965_dri.so, with a display of 1920x1080
properly detected with its EDID through an HDMI to DVI converter
connection. This is done without any need for a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Tremendous work. From my perspective, this bug can now be closed. Thanks!
