compilation terminated.
Makefile:529: recipe for target 'ext/date/php_date.lo' failed
gmake: *** [ext/date/php_date.lo] Error 1

What is obvious is that "php.h" ought to be visible to the compiler, given that its directory is included in one of the -I command line options, but for some reason I cannot diagnose, it is not.

If I attempt to "make" in the work directory, this problem does not arise. This, however does not completely circumvent the issue, although in a few cases it does. When it doesn't a new show stopper occurs: one or other tool reports:

toolname: CWRAPPPERS_CONFIG_DIR is not found in the environment

(or something along those lines - it is an explicit message, I discovered, in the cwrapper sources).

Now, for some additional data points.

1. I had a working amd64 (64-bits) NetBSD 7.1 installation where this problem just did not occur, at all. I also have an i386 (32-bits) NetBSD 7.1 installation which also built and installed all the selected packages (and it is quite a few) with only minor tweaks required.

2. To my uneducated mind, it seems like the depth of nesting of executions involved in building a package somehow exceeds some parameter in the compilation environment and that is how command line arguments and/or environment variables are not conveyed correctly. I tried to reduce the memory footprint of the kernel to free more memory, in case it is the somewhat limited amount (512MiB - for reasons I don't know, that's the maximum vmware allows me at this point, I could not go off in that direction, not enough time :-(). The smaller kernel made no difference, but it may be important to note that I was using the GENERIC kernel until I got a new kernel built.

3. When building the new kernel (the TREACLE in the uname -a output above), the config facility reported a problem with mk.conf that is still baffling me: the .if ${OPSYS} == IRIX (or similar) line in /etc/mk.conf, edited to my requirements. That was a bit worrying. I could not figure what was bothering the make program about it (it looked contextual, rather than obvious).

4. The most recalcitrant package was devel/glib2, which of course is required by a significant number of useful packages. I resorted to installing it from the binary package, but I'm concerned that my preference of options will not be matched by the released packages and that such a mix-and-match approach may create more problems than it solves.

5. Another obstacle I picked up in the process of trying to work around the primary problem occurred in building devel/cmake. Largely, I found one can execute "make" in the target (object) directory if compilation or similar fails and in general that produces a useful result. Then, "make install" in the pkgsrc directory will complete an installation successfully. Sadly, cmake can be built in this fashion, but the product is actually _installed_ in /usr/local which is of no help to someone in my predicament. Again, digging deeper in this case seemed like a massive endeavour likely to fix a problem that should not have occurred in the first place.

6. I'll try to find the time to create a local QEMU instance of NetBSD 7.1 for the amd64 architecture (the host I had has broken down) and see if I can reproduce the previous successful build of the many packages I need, but that will take some time, I'm really hoping we can deal with this problem sooner than that.

7. I'm not sure I need to include the /etc/mk.conf file I use in this space, but maybe it will save an iteration. I'll include in the next input block (How to repeat the problem:). Oops, I can only cut-n-paste it and that could take some doing, it is a long file. Perhaps I can send it later as an attachment?

 Lucio,

The fact that your /etc/mk.conf is so long is worrying to me. Could you =
try building without /etc/mk.conf? That should work on NetBSD, in =
 principle.

If some dependencies cannot be found even though =E2=80=9Emake=E2=80=9C =
in the source directory works, that=E2=80=99s due to buildlink =
 (https://www.netbsd.org/docs/pkgsrc/buildlink.html). However, that =
should not happen unless you are working on pkgsrc itself; the problem =
is likely different, something about cwrappers.

It is not clear from your description if the compilation failures are =
reproducible. If they are, please send the work/.work.log for that =
compilation, and the error message that goes with it.=

The first start would be to find the corresponding entry in work.log for
this invocation. It tells you the translated command. The two most
 likely failure cases here are:
 (1) Somewhere in /usr/pkg/obj/lang/php71/work.treacle is a symlink.
 (2) I'm actually not sure about the order of reject/pass for WRKOBJDIR
below PREFIX. I would normally avoid that...

Thanks, Benny. I'll investigate the possibility of omitting the
mk.conf file, but keep in mind that it works very effectively (but I'd
like to improve that aspect) for a suite of utilities that one may
want built as a group. The file I use is 1956 lines long, adopted
verbatim from the pkgsrc directory mk/defaults/mk.conf and, as I
mentioned, faulty in the way it queries ${OPSYS} when it is not set.
It ought to be the responsibility of the pkgsrc team to ensure that
the example does not hide some serious flaw in it and I'll be very
happy to assist addressing this, if I may.

Also, it is sometimes difficult to explain oneself properly, let me
try to clarify the way the problem presents itself: During compilation
of lang/php56, the '#include "php.h"' directive fails (possibly for a
single module, but one can't tell), claiming it cannot find "php.h".
The same, oddly, occurs in lang/php71. Now, in both cases, the
displayed command line shows quite clearly that the -I... option
needed to ensure that "php.h" is found is present. I can't recall the
specific directory, but (a) I tracked it down and (b) I executed the
command as displayed and it completed successfully. That is where I
then proceeded to "make" in the object directory and, in that specific
instance, the make and also "make install" worked fine.

In other cases, of which devel/glib2 was the most insistent, the
problem presented itself as a cwrappers failure. The only thing these
have in common is the use of memory to hold in one case the command
line arguments and in the other the environment variable. That, of
course, is only a guess on my part and now that I think about it, the
other common factor is that these are elements in the use of libtool
or cwrappers (even more guess work on my part, now).

So, what I am looking for is a weak spot around the propagation of
these values from a parent process to its child, one where single
values are dropped, even though it is also possible that these values
are not dropped, but truncated. Somebody who is familiar with libtool
and/or cwrapper is more likely to relate my indication to the real
 circumstances.

I can certainly replicate them and will gladly collect some logging
information. There was another odd error that I seem to recall as
relevant, and that was a configure failure: it seems that
USE_LANGUAGES did not include "c" at the time of execution of the
configure script (as reported in the config.log file). Adding "c" as a
value in the Makefile for the package made that go away. It again
serves to suggest that there is some data loss of corruption
involving, I would propose, environment variables, which in turn may
be used to assigne values - possibly unsuccessfully - to command line
arguments. The size of the mk.conf file may in this case be relevant.
Do you happen to know whether stripping it of comment lines would have
 some diagnostic value?

 Lucio.

Below is the full output of an attempt to build "lang/php56" in the
failing context I have reported. The possibility that there may be a
symbolic link in the given path ought to be excluded: here is a
 breakdown:

 drwxr-xr-x 15 root wheel 512 Apr 17 12:33 /usr/pkg

 /usr/pkg/obj/lang/php56/work.treacle/php-5.6.30

As for the "order of reject/pass", I'm afraid you've lost me, I will
not try to respond to that.

In my opinion, the problem involves the loss of a string value
somewhere in preparing commands for execution. I'm usually wrong in
such matters, but those who listen to me somehow seem to get the right
idea from what I'm saying even though what I have to say is unrelated
to the eventual solution - go figure!

Is this the portion of .work.log you suggest may be useful?
