Trying to boot with the install CD from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-8.0/amd64/installation/cdrom/boot.iso

fails with an NVIDIA GeForce 210. I see some messages about the kernel probing drm before the boot halts.  The last couple lines are (sorry these are hand copied):

 Here is the dmesg with nouveau disabled.  There is a warning about
 checking the "system log", but I wasn't sure how to with the boot CD.

 Hmm, tricky - could you (I know this is asking for much) try to extract the
 firmware from base.tgz manually, then extract the kernel set somewhere
 else and move the kernel as (say) netbsd.80 into your existing / ?

 Then boot that kernel, hope it panics, and get a crash dump?

 I not sure if I'll have time and access to try all that.  If I do, could
 I use a USB thumbdrive or external USB drive for this?  Or could I use a
 CD with the right kernel and debug info burned on disk, or does the
 crash dump need to record on disk somewhere?

 I got a little more info from dmesg, don't know if it will help or
 should be trusted.  But when I booted the CD normally (with nouveau
 enabled), waited til the screen stopped updating, then hit the reset
 button, then booted with nouveau disabled, then went to Utility Menu ->
 /bin/sh and typed 'dmesg', I seemed to get the both dmesg record from
 both boots.

 If the dmesg can be belived, it seems like the system booted, and maybe
 the screen stopped updating?  Anyway, here it is:

 Yes, if power is not lost (so RAM is preserved) the message buffer
 contents are not lost, and you can see exactly that.

 Yes, that is what it looks like to me - the display driver simply could not handle
 graphics card properly (but does not crash or hang.)

 In that case, you should continue with graphics disabled for now, get the
 system set up, and networking functioning so you can ssh into the system
 (or telnet or something if you must...)

 Then boot again with the nv driver not disabled - when the boot has had
 time to complete, ssh in, and see what happens.   You might even be able
 to "blind" login on the console (you know there's a login prompt, just assume
 it is there and type at it ... if that works, you might even be able to try 
 starting X and see what happens.)

 Meanwhile, someone (not me) who knows at least something about nouveau
 might be able to disgnose all those drm errors from your dmesg.
