Hi,
Wanting to try NetBSD(on an AMD64 PC), I tried to install in various ways but none of them seems to work.
When I use the USB intallation version, the file is not recognized as a possible "install file". I tried 4 third-party programs to do this: Unetbootin, Etcher, Rufus and Easy USB-creatoe Lite. None of them would even start to put it on the USB. Then I downloaded the file again, maybe it was corrupt. Same result.
Then I tried burning it to a DVD with FreeISOburner, at least the burning went fine. But when I booted, only a black screen appeared and it stayed that way...
What can I do to at least install NetBsd?
Thanks in advance for any reaction.
Greetings from Belgium!!
Wim Van Loock
PS Meanwhile I am downloading the torrent file, mayb that'll work....but that's going to take about 6 hours....

What OS are you running?
On Linux you just need to
gunzip NetBSD-8.0-amd64-install.img.gz
then
sudo dd if=3DNetBSD-8.0-amd64-install.img of=3D/dev/sdX bs=3D1M
where X is your usb stick.
Note that if you have an EFI system you need the UEFI install image. Also
note that there are different images for DVD and usb.
Good luck

For amd64 the easiest way to try is the USB image, if your machine
has UEFI firmware:
https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-8.0/images/NetBSD-8.0-amd64-uefi-install.img.gz
or if it uses BIOS:
https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-8.0/images/NetBSD-8.0-amd64-install.img.gz
To put it onto install media, you would on a NetBSD or linux machine
do something like:
gunzip NetBSD-8.0-amd64-install.img.gz
dd bs=1m if=NetBSD-8.0-amd64-install.img of=/dev/....
(I don't know the proper device name on linux, on NetBSD it would likely
be rsd0d).
Or if you want to download/prepare the USB stick on Windows, you
could use: https://www.netbsd.org/~martin/rawrite32/
Maybe the DVD you burned is bad? The ISO image works for me.

Hi,
First of all, thanks for trying to help me out!!
I am a step further now, I think.
In Linux I managed to make a USB-stick which
gives me the following menu:
1/Install NetBSD
2/Install - NO ACPI
3/Install - NO ACPI, NO SMP
4/Drop to boot prompt
But, whatever I choose, after passing
a lot of green text on the screen, the screen
stays black, nothing happens.
Any suggestions?
Greetings,
Wim Van Loock

Ah, that is a graphics card issue. Which graphics card do you have?
Some newer NVidia one?

From Linux, what's the output of
lspci
Make and model of the machine?
As much info as possible about your hardware.

Can you try to drop to the boot prommpt, then do
boot -c
and when the kernel stops early do:

You said you see the ACPI / no ACPI bootloader menu. It has an option
(5?) to drop to the boot prompt. Please use that and then try the
boot -c ... commands I suggested.
This should disable the drm/kms framebuffer for your video card
(just for debugging purposes) and should allow you to get to a login
prompt. If that works, we can try to get proper error messages from
the original failure and see how to fix that.

One more idea:
could you try to drop to the boot prompt and then do something like:
> userconf disable radeondrmkmsfb
> boot
This avoids the keyboard interaction later at the userconf prompt but
still should disable the drmkms driver for your graphics card.
