NetBSD 10.1 i386 (Dec 16 2024) can't get a uname but it's the generic kernel on the i386 installer.
>Description:
Hello, I have an HP Pavilion zd8000 with NetBSD 10.1 installed alongside FreeDOS, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows Vista. I have it set to multiboot and everything, and I installed it with the latest version of 10.1 using a USB stick. However, when I go to boot NetBSD, after choosing option 1.. it does this:

20389236+589100+746196 [919406+939408+1024752]=0x17787ac
heap full (0x6f05c+7120)

The computer's specifications are:
-3.4GHz Pentium 4 HT (Prescott2M)
-3GB DDR2 memory
-500GB SSD with FreeDOS (8GB), Windows 2000 (120GB), Windows Vista (160GB), NetBSD (remainder)
-ATI Mobility Radeon X600 256MB
-Atheros AR5008X wireless card (speaking of which, it, athn0, times out during the setup process on NetBSD 10.1)
-Realtek RTL8139 integrated ethernet adapter
-Intel 915P chipset with 82801EB(?) southbridge
-DVD+/-RW IDE laptop optical drive
-1680x1050 internal LCD panel

Thanks in advance, if this could be resolved it would mean so much to me. I am very passionate about old computers, this one especially.
>How-To-Repeat:
Use any Pavilion zd8000/Compaq nx9600/Presario X6000 running the latest BIOS (F.34). Does not matter if custom, since mods shouldn't interfere with the issue here. Ideally the system should be the 256MB X600 version, but any version will do since they share the same platform.

I think this will happen if you just install NetBSD 10.1 on one of these machines (specifically i386!), I specifically had the Windows 2000 and Vista partitions under an extended partition for whatever reason but I did the exact same thing with a Dell Dimension 5150 and I have not had an issue whatsoever.

This means something goes wrong in the bootloader and it might be a
bug in your BIOS or UEFI.

Did you boot from an USB stick or a CD?

Can you test if the amd64 versions are able to load the kernel?

There are two variants of that:

 https://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-10.1/images/NetBSD-10.1-amd64-install.img.gz

It would be interesting to know if one of them works.

 Martin

Fixed; removing the "rndseed" variable from boot.cfg resolved the issue. Th=
is computer doesn't have a random number generator it seems.
