System: NetBSD martins.aprisoft.de 11.99.6 NetBSD 11.99.6 (GENERIC) #306: Sat Jun 27 10:46:54 CEST 2026 martin@martins.aprisoft.de:/home/martin/current/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC amd64
Architecture: x86_64
Machine: amd64
>Description:
On this machine:
machdep.dmi.board-vendor = ASUSTeK Computer INC.
machdep.dmi.board-product = P8P67
booting via UEFI does not work. The kernel is loaded and then the screen
instantly turns black, and the system seems to hang.
This also happens when I drop to the boot prompt and select a different gop.
Boting via BIOS works and gives this dmesg output:

So it actually hangs with serial console too:
> boot -s
23939152+798144+1299008 [1025381+1431984+1050136]=0x1d59088
... and then it's dead, doesn't react on BRK or anything.
This is the uefi boot from -current from Jul 1.
Now that I have serial console wired up, I can test debug patches or
options. Any suggestions?
And, btw. as that is the first thing I ask in such situations myself:
the firmware is the latest one available from ASUS.

When I use either -v or -x as flag to boot, the system does not hang
but reboot immediately after loading the kernel:

What does the memory map (`memmap compact`) looks like. Maybe there's something
in the way and you have to `reloc` the kernel?

So I have three areas "Conventional Memory", the kernel would fit into
two of them, but not the middle one starting at 00000000df402000
(if I did my math correctly).

Yes, that looks OK. Can you show the detailed map (`memmap`) as well? Just the
1st page alone should be sufficient.
Also, are there any errors logged by apei(4) in CSM mode after the system
reboots from a failed UEFI boot?
I see something like this in dmesg after the system reboots if I `reloc` the
kernel to somewhere the system doesn't like:

That I can't test easily right now, will move the machine back in a testable
setup if that helps and the problem is not obvious.

Ah, thare's something in the way. This looks exactly like what manu@ added
`reloc' to the EFI bootloader (and SELFRELOC to the kernel) for (see links in
prev. mail).

Looks like there's space here. Can you try `reloc 0xD200000' before `boot'?

Unfortunately this does not change things:
Press return to boot now, any other key for boot menu
booting NAME=NBImgRoot:netbsd - starting in 0 seconds.

Does OpenBSD or FreeBSD boot OK?

OpenBSD crashes just like NetBSD in UEFI mode (and works with BIOS boot).
FreeBSD 15.1 works fine in both modes.
I failed to make the system crash and reboot reliably, so I couldn't get
the error reporting you asked for.

OK, thanks. Does `reloc none' do the trick?

Unfortunately not (note: I have a slightly newer kernel and bootloader
now, so numbers may differ slightly):
Press return to boot now, any other key for boot menu
booting NAME=NBImgRoot:netbsd - starting in 0 seconds.

and hangs hard again.
