(The standards conformance in particular should be documented; history
is good too though.)

The standards conformance appears to be POSIX 2001, although someone
should crosscheck this. Meanwhile we seem to have added it in
.Nx 3.0 ,
or at least that's what the log of kern/sys_generic.c indicates.
