I obtained a HP Jornada 720 to try NetBSD/hcparm on, it seems that the installer panics at the same place on NetBSD 7.0-RELEASE & HEAD.
Installer fetches kern-JORNADA720.tgz (I'm using HTTP) & attempting to extract it, results in a panic:
ock error
Stopped in pid 54.1 (tar) at c00858a8: mov r15, r14

Tried the HEAD snapshot from the 24th of February just now. Installer
fetches kern-JORNADA720.tgz & goes to extract it with tar, but again
panic. This time however the message is a different.

 fs_init_vnode: dup alloc
Stopped in pid 93.1 (tar) at c0049274: mov pc, r14

It seems that the crash only happens when attempting to partition &
install over the network using a PCMCIA ne(4) card.

Preparing the CF card on another NetBSD host with a FAT partition
containing install sets & a blank NetBSD partition results in a
successful install if the installation source is a local path which is
 the FAT partition.

...that means typing over the network but a local CF card? (and not,
say, an NFS volume or an iscsi CF card or anything like that?)

 bizarro.

I meant, booting jornada from CF card, repartitioning on the Jornada &
attempting to install sets from a network source (via http in my case)
 results in the panic.
Partitioning & copying archive sets on another system & then installing
on Jornada from a locally mounted path works just fine.

Recategorised to kern as the issue doesn't appear to be specific to
 hpcarm[1]

Is this with ffsv2 or v1?

With ffsv2 dup alloc panics have been seen before when caused by races
in the buffer cache; at least once source of that got fixed but it
wouldn't surprise me at all if there are others.

(also in general please include the backtrace with panics...)

 v1 here (set by default)

 I see.

I'll retry and get a backtrace (tonight or tomorrow).

HEAD appears to have a separate issue now which now sysint & disklabel
are unable to detect the CF disk despite kernel listing it as wd0.
Hence I was unable to test there.

I have however just been able to install NetBSD 7.0_STABLE without issue
 (build 201607090330Z) via HTTP.
