https://www.netbsd.org/docs/network/netboot/files.html instructs the user to manually create an fstab(5) *without* kern, ptyfs or procfs entries. However, sysinst(8) -- at least -- has dependencies on ptyfs and will break without ptsfs in the fstab, resulting in a confusing and broken user experience.
