>Description:
Hi,
I have had two recent Xorg freeze and reboot after several seconds (XFCE4), it is curious but in both cases I was playing with wip/WSJTx package. Perhaps it is related to USB audio card due to xhci errors. I do not know.

I have had also freezes with Debian Xorg in the near past. They were very frequent. In NetBSD I have not had one until yesterday and todays one, always when playing to make WSJTx work.

Hi,
Just wondering could you try a -current kernel? It should work with a -10
userland.
There have been changes to the way xhci handles zero length packets (ZLP)s.
I don't know if these affect uaudio directly but it may be another usb device
hogging the bus (esp network devices) causing trouble.
Part of the fix was pulled up to -10 so maybe a new -10 stable kernel would
suffice.
But please try a -current kernel and see how it goes.
Best regards,
Nat

Hello Nat
I have been playing with WSJTX using this current kernel for an hour
netbsd-nuc$ uname -a
NetBSD netbsd-nuc.home 11.99.4 NetBSD 11.99.4 (GENERIC) #0: Fri Dec 26
07:07:35 UTC 2025
mkrepro@mkrepro.NetBSD.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC amd64
It has not crashed yet. Will continue using it and see what happens.
Regards.
Ramiro.

Hi,
Finally I had another system crash, this time with current kernel. No
core in /var/crash. I think that I switched off/on my external sound
card cause it was malfuctioning at that moment.
I only got this in /var/log/messages:

Hello,
Thanks for the idea. Note that I am extremely novice and that I do not
know what I am doing ;-)
This is my USB audiodevice:
netbsd-nuc# usbdevs -v | grep Audio
port 3 addr 13: full speed, power 200 mA, config 1, FastTrack
Pro(0x2012), M-Audio(0x0763), rev 1.00(0x0100)
I think that the procedure would be:
-Change "src/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs" to add Vendor and Product of the Fast
Track Pro.
-Execute "make -f Makefile.usbdevs" in "src/sys/dev/usb" to regenerate
"src/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs.h" and "src/sys/dev/usb/usbdevs_data.h"
-Edit usb_quirks.c and add
UQ_AU_NO_FRAC and/or UQ_AU_INP_ASYNC lines for my card.
-Recompile de kernel and reboot into it.
What should I expect from that change?
Thanks.
Ramiro.
PS: or perhaps may I modify usb_quirks.c directly placing the numbers
and recompile the kernel? I wait for your advice.

That's correct.
> What should I expect from that change?
I think there's a possibilty that the card stalls in the record interrupt due to fractional
packets being read from the device so I'd try AU_NO_FRAC as a quirk first.
Hopefully It will allow for the device to not issue IOERRORS and continue working.

Yes you can do that, if it works I'll prepare a formal patch to commit.

Hello Nat, thanks so much for answering. I am going to try, the problem
is that I do not know what to do exactly for trigger the panic.
I am going to try AU_NO_FRAC first.
I will play with wsjtx form some time and see what happens.
Regards.

Hi, I did that:
netbsd-nuc$ diff usb_quirks.c.orig usb_quirks.c
256a257,258
> { 0x0763,0x2012, 0x100,
> { UQ_AU_NO_FRAC, NULL }},
netbsd-nuc$
recompiled with:
netbsd-nuc$ ./build.sh -u -U kernel=MYKERNEL
netbsd-nuc# cp /usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/obj/MYKERNEL/netbsd
/netbsdnofrac
I will boot that netbsdnofrac kernel and see what happens.
Regards.

I booted to netbsdnofrac kernel.
I was playing with WSJTx and after a while audio stopped working, I

Any luck with the other quirk?

Hello Nat,
Sorry but I was involved in WSJTx debugging and EXT2 sharing between
Linux and NetBSD issues that I forgot completely this subject.
I changed sample rate in the card from 48.000 to 44.100 in order to
WSJTx proper decodings and audio USB card has been working very fine
during hours and days, very stable indeed.
Should I test the UQ_AU_INP_ASYNC to see if the errors are removed?
A question about the last errors that noted here days before and I do
not fully understand:

the IOERRORs are caused because I switched the sound card off?
or...
the error arised and when I saw that the card did not work I switched
off the card?
I am a bit lost, tell me what I should do after changing to the
UQ_AU_INP_ASYNC modified kernel.
Regards.
Ramiro.

Hi Nat,
New compiled kernel with the UQ_AU_INP_ASYNC option:
netbsd-nuc$ uname -a
NetBSD netbsd-nuc.home 10.1 NetBSD 10.1 (MYKERNEL) #2: Wed Jan 14
19:12:56 CET 2026
ramiro@netbsd-nuc.home:/usr/obj/sys/arch/amd64/compile/MYKERNEL amd64
netbsd-nuc$ diff usb_quirks.c.orig usb_quirks.c

netbsd-nuc$
I have forced switched off and on the audio USB card, I see that the
IOERROR are cause by that.
