https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=274615 was filed due to a bug in the kernel around updating struct stat for files. This was helpful but on reflection might not have actually addressed the underlying issue with the test.

Upon further inspection since I am updating our copy of tests/ in NetBSD, I stumbled on a local modification that seems unnecessary: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D55290 . This spawned a larger change to help better document what was failing and why as it's unclear what commands actually failed due to what commands are being called and what assertions are being checked.
