Compaq iPAQ H3600 (cpu=0x0c108000 machine=0x01c40201)
>Description:
The installer does not seem to be able to carry out disk operations,
it get stuck in a "lost interrupt / error reading fsbn0 / device
timeout" loop when trying to install on the iPaq H3600.
I followed the wiki, and put hpcboot.exe, netbsd-ipaq.gz,
netbsd-ipaq.symbols.gz, miniroot.fs on the CF Card.
The (known working, industrial grade, 1GB FAT32 formatted) CF card is
attached via the CF Card sled expansion pack (PE2036B, p/n 173391-001,
the PCB says the board is a 50H00043-00, rev A04). It is formatted
(in Windows) to FAT32, single partition. The card works fine under
Windows CE.
I start HPCBoot from the CF card with the following settings:
HPCBOOT Build 16; settings:
\Storage Card\netbsd.gz
Compaq iPAQ H3600
root file system: wd [miniroot.fs]
[X] boot verbosely
[X] serial console [9600]
Then the following happens, please see my actions in the below marked with :::

>a: Install NetBSD to hard disk
b: Upgrade NetBSD on a hard disk
You have chosen to install NetBSD on your hard disk. This will change
information on your hard disk. You should have made a full backup before
this procedure! This procedure will do the following things:
a) Partition your disk
b) Create new BSD file systems
c) Load and install distribution sets
d) Some initial system configuration
(After you enter the partition information but before your disk is changed,
you will have the opportunity to quit this procedure.)
Shall we continue?
Yes or no?

I am unable to proceed with installation.
The same happens if I try to partition instead of install -- at any
point when disk operations might happen I start getting the same
errors.
>How-To-Repeat:
Try to do any disk operations in the installer. Same errors come up
when trying to run partitioning.

If the CF card only has one FAT partition then there isn't anywhere
to install NetBSD to.

Thank you, Robert! Can you point me me to a set of correct instructions for disk partitioning?

Thanks uwe, I've followed the document, and partitioned exactly as
described, installed the sets, etc.
Disklabel is as follows:
```
# disklabel sd0
# /dev/rsd0:
type: SCSI
disk: STORAGE DEVICE =20
label: fictitious
flags: removable
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 32
total sectors: 1989792
rpm: 3600
interleave: 1
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0 # microseconds
track-to-track seek: 0 # microseconds
drivedata: 0=20
On booting the kernel copied onto disk I still get the same error:
This:
wdc0:0:0: lost interrupt
type: ata tc_bcount: 512 tc_skip: 0
probably indicates that something is not right when netbsd tries to
talk to the card.
I'm not familiar with this hardware or wdc(4) internals. One thing
that you can try _easily_ is using older NetBSD releases. You don't
have to bother with the installation, just drop an old kernel to the
CF card under a different name and try to boot it. Some wd/wdc
changes might have broken the driver for hpcarm b/c it, obviously,
doesn't get a lot of testing there...
The next thing to try (if none of the old kernels work) would be using
an older, simpler CF card. I don't know _anything_ about the
hardware, but HPC is _old_ and who knows what corners they cut.
E.g. you can't use large cards (a 8GB CF card doesn't work in my
Jornada 690) b/c some address lines are not there or something. I did
run into cards that just didn't work in my hpcsh, though it's been
decades ago and I don't remember any details.
The CF Card works fine in the machine otherwise; it's an old 1G
Industrial grade CF card (used to hold a Windows XP Embedded
installation).
However I just discovered not long ago that what I purchased listed as
a "8600" is in fact a *8630*. Might this be the cause; is the
underlying hardware just different enough to cause these problems?
No idea then, sorry. If you are interested in giving it a try, you
can try to compile your own kernel with
options ATADEBUG
options ATADEBUG_MASK=0xff
but you will have to read the sources.
