I am attempting to install the current stable version of NetBSD onto my Acer Aspire V. I was able to dd the unzipped USB img onto a flash drive, and successfully booted the installer from my laptop.

As soon as I proceed past the bootloader (after pressing 1 or waiting), I start getting a host of log messages about devices, which pushes the text of the installer off screen. I don't have time to read options before the text is covered up, although I can still select options rather blindly.

Is there any way I can work around this? I tried `boot -q` to no avail.

Is it a constant stream of messages or just one time things (like: your
batterie state is now fully charged)?

You can use Ctrl-L to make the installer redraw the screen.

This also might have been fixed already, try a "daily" snapshot from the
 latest netbsd-11 verision from:

 	https://nycdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily/netbsd-11/latest/

It might also be helfull if you give us an idea what kind of messages
you get, can you give an example (like the last two or three lines you see)?

 Martin

 Hi Martin,

 Thank you for your response!

Here is a screenshot of the messages. They are unfortunately consistently
displaying repeatedly. The error messages are specifically about things
like the mouse, touchsreen, and other hardware devices. I think it's worth
noting, this laptop has had hardware issues, like the Wi-Fi card not
working, and not turning on at all. Happy to take a video if more helpful.

I did not know about ctrl-L to redraw the screen! I will give that a go,
with the latest "daily" snapshot, and report back.

 Thanks again!
 Morgan

I created a live USB from an img using the link you provided, and still get
continuous log messages like "uhid4: detached". However, I can proceed
through the installation by mashing ctrl-L.

 Thanks!

 Hi,

Some time ago about 15 or so years I had laptop with ELAN touchscreen.

I found that I was necessary to open the uts(4) device and keep it open.

Back then there was no usb quirk that I could add easily - thankfully now
there is the usb quirk UQ_ALWAYS_ON which I believe will stop the console from
 being spammed by messages.

I need the dmesg of the system to get the ELAN vendor and product so I can add
a quirk addition for you to try. Or you can try adding UQ_ALWAYS_ON in
usb_quirks.c with the product and vendor ids and see if the messages go away.

One thing that is possible if you dont intend to use the touchscreen and just
want the messages gone is to boot with "userconf disable uts; boot netbsd"

Best regards and I hope this helps,

 Nat

 HI,

Apply the following and rebuild your kernel.

Should it work when its added a formalized name will be added to usbdevs
 instead of the 0x0125 identifier.

Best regards and I hope this helps,

 Hi,

Heres a compete patch (I just realized that the quirk was only used with
 ums(4)):

Don't forget to run make -f Makefile.usbdevs in the sys/dev/usb directory first.

 Best regards,

 Nat

PS: Disabling uts at boot probably wont work and instead flood the console with
 ....not configured messages.

 My apologies for the delay.

I'm not sure if this would still be helpful, but here is the output of dmesg I was able to dd onto a flash drive.

 https://gist.githubusercontent.com/kothman/ccda3de4d4f3d1e72fe08f9cd86d7034/raw/8dacc05da00fb4f6476503470e378d57fdd12dd9/dmesg-output.log

And I believe this is the line with the vendor ID being referenced.
     uhidev0: ELAN (0x04f3) Touchscreen (0x0125), rev 2.00/0.21, addr 9, iclass 3/0

For what it's worth, `userconf uts disable; boot netbsd` had no effect one way or another (did not boot at all, running separately only booted netbsd), and I would see console messages even when plugging in or removing a usb drive.

 All the best,
 Morgan Kothman

Noted. It's in the second longer patch posted to the mailing list.

Console messages when removing or plugging in a usb drive is expected. When
devices are attached or detached it prints to the console.

The issue is the continous spammig of the touchscreen.

I posted a second patch (which hopefully you have) to the mailing-list (the
longer one with changes to uts.c). If this stops the touchscreen spamming the
 console I'll commit it soon.

Best regards and thanks for testing this,

 Nat

 Hi Nat,

Thank you for the info, and your work on the patch.

I am pleased to say I was able to get NetBSD compiled for the first
time, and confirmed that I am no longer getting spammed by messages
 during the installation process.

 All the best,
 Morgan
